Our experience is the same Carolyn. It is the AMOUNT of growth that makes the difference. Some time back Caralon Kennels had the experience of Micro rendering their stud dog sterile. The organism is everywhere however, when the growth goes into overdrive the system is out of wack. I can't help but wonder if the immune system is not involved in that the system cannot/ does not have the ability to maintain a healthy balance. It would appear that breeders have experienced the fact that micro can be passed through breeding. You and I have beat this one to death on mycoplasma...........more than a few times.......and it is one very dead horse. <G> I have already agreed to disagree with you on mycoplasma. I won't get into it anymore if you don't mind ....as that was not the purpose of my post. We have experienced it with one of our bitches along with a few other bitch owners that were infected by the exact same stud. The results were devastating. We also had one stud infected for a short time by an untested bitch years ago. The key to all of this just like any other bacterial issue ....if the numbers are at an abnormal growth....you have a problem. If you don't test....you don't know. <G> As a stud dog owner......we require it. What you do is up to you. I don't see it as a 'culture game' but protection for the stud AND the bitch to be bred to him. I was not comparing C.B. to mycoplasma.........not even closely! <G> PS.....I already know Dr. Hutch's opinion on this also, and my Repro Vet who has been to his seminars strongly disagrees according to his experiences...as do we. Why? Because mycoplasma is NOT a VIRUS, but a free-growing and living BACTERIA The primary difference between a Virus and a bacteria is that viral infections DO NOT respond to antibiotic therapy..CB IS always contagious and can be transmitted to humans as well.Back in the old days I believe it was called "Butcher's Fever"or Undulant Fever If I am not mistaken an outbreak of Brucellosis should be reported to the Health dept. since it does pose a threat to humans. Mycoplasma is a BACTERIA can be found in nearly all soil samples, under finger nails, etc.It is a normal occurring micro-organism and in most cases does not pose a problem.Bacterias are "free-living" micro-organisms that grow when the temp, air quality, moisture, etc are IDEAL!They(Myco, strep, etc) CAN be treated with antibiotics, unless they become resistant, such as some staphs and streps have become That is why so many micro-organisms can be found in a vag. culture,it is not a "sterile" chamber and it provides and ideal environment for growth. On the other hand, CB is passed through the ingestion or inhalation of infected materials, in other words, through urine, semen, etc. Dogs who come in contact with materials, fluids, dirt or even air particles that have been exposed to CB can contract it and be carriers forever. Antibiotic therapy has been attempted, but with little or no improvements shown. Before I wrote this I reviewed several pieces of information regarding mycoplasma and CB. ALL listed mycoplasma as being a normal flora in the culture. As with all cultures much depends on the amount of growth and the host.Treating non-symptomatic animals with antibiotics "just because" for scant, light or mild growths is more dangerous, as it kills the good germs as well as the bad sets up as situation for creating bacteria that is antibiotic resistant!!! If a person feels compelled to test for mycoplasma, all testing should be done across the board, and not solely the responsibility of the bitch owner!!! If the "culture" game" is going to be played, and a person truly believes that mycoplasma is contagious, then bitch owners should require stud dog owners to provide cultures BEFORE every breeding or show proof that a culture has been done AFTER every bitch that is bred, as semen is not "sterile" and the sheath of a dog harbors a large number of bacteria, including mycoplasma Dogs should be labeled so-called "carriers" as well as bitches!!Christine > Same dilemma with mycoplasma. Typically no symptoms, and highly contagious. > I sure hope responsible breeders are requiring these tests along with a vaginal > culture before breeding. > > Carolyn marhaven@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx > www.Marhaven.com > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Peggy To: Showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2008 7:22 AM > Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Canine Brucellosis in Michigan...IMPORTANT > > > > > =========================================================================== > POST is Copyrighted 2007.
