A few years back I had a bad fight between 2 bitches. I was on the phone witha puppy client. She was telling me how sweet her puppy was that I had sold her. These 2 bitches had gotten into it before but I had been able to control them. Not this time. I I kicked the aggressor in the ribs as hard as I could and finally got her attention. Two weeks later she was placed in a pet home on a farm and lived there the rest of her life. I keep a small number of dogs and they need to be able to get along. Must be some kind of "call of the wild" instinct" where the group goes in to kill the prey. Whew, I'm glad I'm not dealing with dog fights any more! Tish In a message dated 9/25/2014 11:43:31 P.M. She had to either let go or pass out. BTW - this was an intact bitch trying to kill an older neutered male. The fight started with an intact male attacking the older male. Once that male was stopped and taken away, the bitch attacked the older male. And, she wanted to kill him for sure. Barb Hively - PA DNA. This just happened down at my agility/obedience field where I train my two shepherds. It was the second intermediate obedience class when the dogs were on their down stay. The two people with Aussies and a GSD in-between the Aussies. The Aussie handlers were not sure if their dogs would stay so they stood close in front of them. I was told the one Aussie kept staring at the GSD with no handler corrections. Seconds from the Aussie's stare it breaks its stay and attacks the shepherd as the other Aussie on the other side of the shepherd chimes in on the fight. Now they have the GSD down on the ground and the fight is on. The trainer runs in to break up the fight. She immediately falls on the ground and the dogs are fighting over her until a man from her class comes in to help. The man got some scratches but no one really got hurt thank heavens. I'm not sure about the dogs at this time. But they need to have a plan for the next time. In the middle of fighting dogs and especially more then two it's very difficult to think what your next move should be. You only have seconds to make decisions. Easy to write about but when it happens each time can be a different situation, especially when your dog is part of the squabble you can become more emotional. Screaming trying to break up the fight is the worse thing to do as we know. Now let us say the dogs are locked - the worse thing is to start pulling them apart. You need two people working together -- lifting each dog up by their back legs or tail moving towards their locked jaws and most of the time they'll let go from their hold. But be careful when they do because in their hyper mode they may turn and bite you. One time long ago my friends' large intact GSD got into it with an intact Husky. The Husky went for the GSDs throat having a death grip. The shepherd falls to the ground and just lays quiet because he knows if he fights his throat will be ripped open. The owner of the Husky got down on the ground and dug his nails into Husky's gums until he released his grip on the shepherd but yet you still have to be quick for each person to pull away the dogs after the bite is released. I've had people use a piece of plywood to try and separate fighting dogs. But who has plywood on hand unless this is a repeated recurrence at home. Just the sound of dogs fighting now for me really bothers me because I've been through enough to implant the horrible image & sound. A great devise to have on hand for such things is a boat air horn. You blow that thing in the faces of fighting dogs and they should stop immediately in their tracks. I'm getting one to carry on my dog walks.
