Even years ago I called the airline and was told a #500 crate was fine. Got
to the airport and was told, "oh, no. The #500 won't fit through the cargo
door.
I had to make other arrangements as I was already at the airport and finally
found flights that could handle it but naturally, it was not a direct flight!
So, I'm not sure you can get a straight answer just by calling the airline.
For me, I won't fly a dog. I DROVE to CA to get my puppy (who really was adult
size).
Just plan ahead if at all possible and drive. Rent a van and pool the ride or
something.

is not necessary to ACTUALLY FLY with a # 500 crate to find out. You just
need to try to

BOOK ONE making sure they know it is a # 500 or larger and make sure it will
fit in both aircraft.
