Mac, 8-1/2 years old, had a vasectomy which worked out quite well. He had to
be neutered a couple years ago when he got an enlarged prostate.

I've done a great deal of research on this one because of the old job and all
teh neonatal surgeries we performed. I can tell you based on what I learned
I'd NEVER have a male dog done unless it was so health related as to save his
life [as in cancer]. Those hormones do more than allow reproduction. They
insure development of secondary sex characteristics including development of
the urethra, the tube through which he urinates, from puppy size to adult
male.  This allows the free flow of urine. If undeveloped it is far easier
to deveolp severe complications from kidney stones. Â Â There is also a higher
incidence of kidney and bladder infections in altered boys and girls. Those
hormones close growth plates - stop bone growth. Without them long bones in
legs continue to grow placing extra strain on ligaments and tendons leading to
an extremely high incidence of cruciate ligament tears in altered animals. In
Rotties the incidence of osteosarcoma [bone cancer]
is something like EIGHTY TIMES HIGHER than in intact animals. [The study was
only done using Rotties so I extrapolate that out to all breeds although so
far the scientists say there is no proof.]Â Â I've had three spayed bitches in
my life, two GSDs and one Aussie, and all three ALL THREE died of
hermangiosarcoma. I'll never spay a bitch again unless to save her life!!!!!
Most vets will say the same thing.... "neuter to prevent testicular cancer"Â
When they do, ask the question "How many cases of testicular cancer have you
treated???"Â Of all the ones I've asked, most have NEVER treated a case.
If she absolutely has to have it done then not before 24 months of age to
insure maturity. My personal opinion is ...if she can't keep him in and keep
him from breeding then she doesn't need a dog.........
Side note:Â Most western European countries consider 'altering' to be a sign
of irresponsibility and say the same..... If you have to surgically alter your
pet to control reproduction you don't need a pet........

home and the owner wanted to know at what age  should she neuter him? He is
almost 11 months old.
I know that some time ago there was a discussion about this.The males that I
usually keep are intact as they are being shown so I really didn't have a very
good answer for her. Any advice would be helpful.
