I would question the policy of routinely putting bitches on Baytril before they come into heat. I have done this myself and realize it is quite a common practice. The last bitch I did this with ended up with pyo after being bred. I took her to Cornell and their reproductive specialist , Dr.Dietrich Volkmann ,suggested that using Baytril as a preventative was something like "shooting a pigeon with a shotgun". It is an overkill. It kills all bacteria (both good and bad) in the reproductive tract and leaves the bitch open for infection. We treated my bitch with shots (2 times a day for 7 days,,Yuck) and clavamox. She is fine now, thank heavens. We will put her on cheque drops to lengthen the time between heat cycles and then treat her with clavamox before she comes into heat the next time. He suggests to not use Baytril as a preventative but to save it for when it is really necessary. Dr. Volkmann will be giving a reproductive seminar in Weedsport, New York on January 22, 2005. Thanks, Darcy Rombaugh, for the information about the seminar.
