Bonnie,
Someone probably told you by now--Barbaro was acting up quite a bit before
the Preakness. On the way to the gate, he was jumping up in the air--people
thought it was because he was so game--probably. Then he crashed through
the starting gate before he was supposed to--he was brought back into
position and a few hundred feet after the race began, it happened.
Something in his right rear leg snapped and his rider pulled him up. So
sad. Just like Ruffian. I even bought a book entitiled "Did Ruffian Die In
Vain?" a few months after she was euthanized.
