I agree with Kathy. Personally, I like the idea of Banfield low cost vet
clinics in Pet Smart. When we lived in PA, Sam and I were very involved with
the local GSD Rescue group and Pet Smart was very supportive of all rescue
groups. There is an adoption center, which seems to be used mainly for cats.
We did adopt a cat from one of the rescue groups that was there on a regular
basis -- Cat Angels, a really great group that we adopted a cat from.
In rescue, one of our very best fundraisers was to particapate in the
Christmas pet ornament program. Pet owners come in with any kind of pet and
got their picture taken. All the money went to rescue, except for a very
small amount that paid for the film and camera. There was no cost to us at
all.
As for Banfield, I believe there is a huge need for low cost vet care. $5.00
for a rabies shot is a bargain. Unfortunately, many people have a difficult
time affording vet care and, yes, I know they probably shouldn't have a pet
if they can't afford quality care. I wouldn't take my pets to them, but for
many people, it may be Banfield or nothing. I think Pet Smart is providing a
much needed service.
When we lived in PA, we had a friend call who had an emergency with her cat
and the nearest emergency clinic was about 45 minutes away. Down here in
Boca Raton, a trip to the emergency clinic will run you a couple of hunded
dollars, at the very least. We had a cat that we were fostering and we
found an abcess on him, probably due to bite from one of our cats, so we
took him to the emergency clinic. The abcess was drained and he was given an
antibiotic (shot and pills) and the bill was close to $400.00. A simple
rabies shot is $50.00 to $75.00 because they charge an office visit in
addition to the shot. People need clinics.
