You hit the nail squarely on the head Carolyn.
I speak to the children's group at a Women's Humane Society, a no kill
shelter, (as long as they can get their hands on an animal, not so much the
feral
cats of dogs who are bad actors), whenever they ask. (Pet Pal's, grades 4-9).
I don't know all of the alphabet soup of organizations that support this
particular shelter, nor do I care. They do a good job in the community IMO;
IMMACULATE facilities, low cost vet clinics, free or low cost training classes
and it's rare they have a dog for adoption following a Saturday (lines form
out the door, literally!) You'd never know you were walking into a shelter in
fact, the facilities rival a hospital's....definitely the cream of the crop
as far as shelters go.
Even so, their staff is at the breaking point with all of the misery they
see, and IMO you can't blame them. My point being, from this type of facility
you can only go down hill, with worse impressions. I know I couldn't do what
these workers do.
WE can't just run around saying there isn't a problem when there most
definitely is, and, yes, education is a good thing, but the issues that need to
be
addresses, sadly, are caused by more than an education deficit. There isn't
litter after litter because people don't know a girl and a boy make babies;
they want the dollars!
There needs to be some distinction between the BYBs Kathy described in her
post (with the GSD jumping out, bothering the neighbors) and those who are
"responsible". Then you get to the whole question of defining "responsible"
because some that cloak themselves with that term are far from responsible,
deliberately flaunting the laws in their communities, openly scoffing at
vaccine and licensing requirements.
I would definitely keep the lines of communication open on this one.
