Thanks, Doris. He was married to the actress, Jean Seberg, maybe it was
her? They found Batka in 1968, in Beverly Hills. He was born in Vilnius,
Lithuania, same place as my maternal grandfather; yes, he was quite
handsome. Sadly, I believe both Romain and Jean committed suicide, one year
apart.

Here is another Welcome Back!!!!! Also, you influenced me to order White
Dog from Amazon. A funny story. MANY years ago, I owned a pet shop in
Hollywood. One day a rather flaky woman came in, and purchased for cash a
Siamese kitten with instructions that I deliver it to a certain address.
The address was the French Embassy in Los Angeles, and the Ambassador at
that time was Romain Gary. Handsome devil!! Anyway, I delivered the kitten
and a few days later he brought it back to my shop as he had been suddenly
called home and could not take it with him. This would have been the
mid-fifties, I think, and he had not as yet written White Dog.
He would not take anything for the kitten, and seemed genuinely sorry to
have to give it up. I never did find out who the flaky woman was. Doris E
