A funny story. MANY years ago, I owned a pet shop in Hollywood. One
day a rather flaky woman came in, and purchased for cash a Siamese
kitten with instructions that I deliver it to a certain address. The
address was the French Embassy in Los Angeles, and the Ambassador at
that time was Romain Gary. Handsome devil!! Anyway, I delivered the
kitten and a few days later he brought it back to my shop as he had been
suddenly called home and could not take it with him. This would have
been the mid-fifties, I think, and he had not as yet written White Dog.
He would not take anything for the kitten, and seemed genuinely sorry to
have to give it up. I never did find out who the flaky woman was. Doris E
