Sure. If she's worth breeding though, I'd invest the time/money to do
progesterone timing.
One of the nicest bitches I've ever owned/finished was the result of an
older gal bred to my (then young and inexperienced) male JR. She had been
bred any number of times and I was told she was NOT an easy bitch to breed.
Never had puppies. I took her from her owner on day 1 of her season and had
an appointment w/ my reproductive guy on day 3. I had to actually talk
him into starting timing so early but I WAS NOT GOING TO MISS THIS BITCH!
Before the appointment, I had put her on the grooming table to make sure
she was nice and clean and JR was in the garage with us. Lot of flirting
going on. As I lifted her down from the table he was trying to breed her. I
figured he's a baby, it was going to be his first girl...he was
clueless...right? But the bitch was receptive...in fact if she's had hands,
she'd
have helped <G>. Easy breeding and we were late for our appointment.
I explained to the reproductive guy why we were late and why when he did a
slide he'd see sperm, making light of it, still thinking JR was green and
clueless. Until we got the progesterone back the following morning. This
gal ovulated on day 3 of her season. And it was day 3 too, it wasn't like
her owner had missed anything...her discharge was almost burgundy. (No
wonder she had missed those other times when bred on the "normal" 13 & 15th
day and no wonder it was so hard to get her bred on those occasions!)
Life lesson learned...trust the dog AND confirm w/ science. Now, this was
one HECK of a nice bitch, Group winning, BOBs in both rings...but if it's
worth doing it's worth spending the $$$$ to do it right. IMO

She's been bred once when she was 3 (unsuccesfull) and then AI'ed when she
was 4 (nothing).
Curious what you all think. I personally feel that it's time to call it
quits.
