Regarding an all chain rode:
If your going to the Bahamas 100' of 5/16" BBB would be more than enough. I
believe 8mm and 5/16" are interchangeable. We returned in July from 6 months
in the Exumas on hull #37 "Sea Yawl Later". I carry 80' of 5/16" with 50' of
5/8" 8 plait spliced to it. Very few times did I extend enough to see the rope
rode.
I believe 80 to 100 pounds of chain is all you need unless your going to the
Carib (where you often anchor in deeper water) or places with rocky bottoms
where you need all chain rode. Let me qualify that statement by saying I have
a 35# Manson Supreme anchor that I am in love with. On clear sand I could hit
the end of the chain at a full knot in reverse immediately after laying the
Manson and it would set so hard you better be holding on.... lol.
My boat has the factory Muir manual winlass, but I also installed a Maxwell 800
electric. It's fast enough to power the anchor down so there is no need to
freefall or even go to the bow to launch or retrieve anchor. The Maxwell 800
is the same unit as the 1200, but it's geared differently to draw the chain
faster (hence the lower pull rating).
I would not change a thing about my ground tackle, here's wishing you a great

I am considering a 100' chain rode which will cover most situations with all
chain. 150' would be better but the added weight of even the 100' bothers me.
It is a pound per foot.
Boat specs say that the chain we have is 8mm. I added a Muir windlass and the
gypsy works well on that chain. Do I need to buy 5/16 BBB chain??
