Well, who would have thought? I changed the thermostat and all is well. I was
getting very little water through the port motor tell-tale following a haul
out. The old thermostat was found to be very crusted with salt, and what ever
the experts say is the residue from the metal reaction to saltwater, and that
it would not close. In fact, both thermostats were found to be encrusted and
stuck about one third open. While both thermostats were in the same condition,
the starboard motor was spraying fine while the port was only spitting. But
after replacing the thermostat and gasket, the tell-tale is now a good stream
and warm to the touch. Problem solved.

I'm sure you've done this already, but don't forget to use something like a
bent paperclip to clear the tell-tale waterflow passage from outside the motor.
On my Yammies the exit hole routinely clogs up, resulting in a momentary worry.

Yesterday I removed the thermostat from the motor and it appears to be stuck
in the open position. I started and ran the motor for a few seconds to
verify that water was indeed flowing from the thermostat housing. I replaced
the housing cover and again ran the motor. The water flow from the tell-tale
remains very weak, only sputtering. I will replace the thermostat on each
motor and then run the boat using only the affected motor to see if it
overheats. The writer on the PDQ website says that if cooling water is
flowing from the thermostat housing, then cooling of the engine is taking
place. While I haven't read any positive reports, I may use Salt-Away to try
to flush out the corrosion that is apparently blocking the cooling passages.
If anyone has a better solution or product, please pass it on.

I have found the PDQ forum www.pdqforum.com to be a great source of info
relating to the Yamaha outboard. Just go to the outboard section and search
all the threads. A lot of info on how to unclog the water passages.
