I purchased a stack pack from Quantum, on a strong recommendation from a
friend that cruised his Atlantic 42 for four years using the same pack, and
loved it. Quantum came out and measured the sail on the boom. (My new
Baracoutta sail is larger than the stock sail, and the old pack no longer
fit.) They send the measurements off to South Africa, where the cover was
made, and then shipped to the local loft. It is lined with vinyl on the
inside, to make it both waterproof and wear resistant. The zipper has
opposing flaps that fold onto each other to make something of a tent that
causes water to run off rather than inside. There is no zipper exposed to
the sun.
The front is open and allows some breathing of the sail. It is held against
the batten cars with a bungie inside the seam on both sides. Note that in
the pictures, I had not installed the lines and blocks that hold the front
sides of the cover up, and therefore close off the front better. In a
really hard downpour, you might get some water in there. The back is also
open. There are mesh panels on the bottom for water drainage. Also
finished slots for the reef lines to lead thru.
The only issue I had is that they made it too short, but the local loft
added material to get it the way I wanted it. You cannot tell. Another
local owner saw mine, and ordered one "just like it." Unfortunately, they
came out and measured his smaller mainsail, and built him one to fit his own
sail, which came out a bit smaller than he would have liked. So if you want
it to fit big, I would suggest you be there when they measure.
Only pictures I have is when they installed it, and used the old lines, but
still had the new ones that came with the pack tied on. So the pics show
extra lines attached that have since been removed. This is extremely well
made. You pick out the Sunbrella color, and the stitching color. I think
installed, with tax, it was about $1100. Am extremely happy with it.
