Stan,

Our dues are still $20 - $25 if one joins during the fourth quarter as that
includes the following year.
The reasons we've been able to maintain our rates have to do with economics.
We have slightly over 200 members, which generates over $4k itself. Some of
our expenses are lower than SACs (insurance, for example). Over the years we
have forged an alliance with Scottsdale Community College whereby we don't
have an expenditure related to a monthly meeting site. We provide a couple
of star parties each year for the astronomy class in return for the room and
A/V equipment. Until recently our website was hosted for free, and now we
receive a very generous discount on this expense. Our largest single expense
is the monthly newsletter. Besides the speakers honorariums, an occasional
porta-potty rental, minimal refreshment and party expenses, and some
recognition, there isn't much else to pay for... now if we ever wanted to
acquire our own observing site we would be in a very different financial
picture. ;-)

The way I look at it is this: it's an astronomy club. It only needs to take
in enough money to pay its bills - we're not looking to make a profit.

Having said all that, I still think $28 annual dues is quite reasonable - I
have already renewed my SAC membership for next year.

Peter
