Seeing your passion for making changes, I know you all will be interested
in attending the conference put on by Nathan Winograd. He will be coming
to Charlotte, from what I understand, sometime this Spring. The conference
is reported to be free, and will inspire and energize all who attend. He
puts on a huge one (expensive to register for) annually in DC, which I
attended last year. It was very inspiring, and the speakers all gave
different
slants on ways to gear your area toward No Kill shelters. (It usually
means cleaning out the current regime and replacing the directors with "Us"!
If you all are interested, I will let you know when his conference date is
definite. If anyone is not familiar with Nathan Winograd, look online at

Indy, I am in and I will participate to any action that can bring some
positive changes but we need somebody who can dedicate their time and skills
to organize a plan. I have my hands full with all the animals here at
Goathouse, as, I am sure, the majority of us are. I know Peter McQueen in Cc,
is
doing a lot to bring together groups, Rescuers and Organizations to close
down all the gas chambers but above that, I firmly believe that the people
who are running the shelters need to be under absolute scrutiny and that the
re should be a representative of the Humane Society present in each shelter
in NC It could be a rescuer in the area that will have that function. Just
that would really change some attitudes and liberties those people take
with the (lack of and plain cruelty in the) care of the animals. We should
also lobby our Representatives, like Kay Hagan, she has an "Animal Rights"
Office in Washington, I assume others would have it too.

Calls and email will not stop this. Animal control hires the worst of the
worst with few exceptions. Part of the reason is the low salary and the
work itself. The county board appoiint someone as animal control director and
they appoint a pal. That pal hires his pals -- none of whom care about
animal life. The ONLY way to change that is to have a political force working
in the state annd county legislatoures. That requires people who willlobby,
work the politicians. Animal people refuse to do that. They are basically
lazy and wimpy and will do no more than, maybe, make a call or send an email
-- maybe. I have begged people all over the nation for 30 years to form a
political arm like the NRA has and we could be as politicailly powerful as
the NRA -- no one has ever shown any interest. So, the realoity is learn to
live with animal abuse and torture and killing because it's here to stay.

A middle-aged hound, dubbed "Daisy," was killed at a municipal animal
control in Columbia, S.C., last week.
The sad-eyed girl was killed even though a rescue agency had committed to
pull her from the facility...the only reason given for the dog's premature
death was that she "needed to be killed."
The ambiguous statement outrages those who were hoping that Daisy would
have a chance at knowing what it meant to be loved...
Daisy's body revealed the hard life that she led before being picked up as
a stray - she was too thin, and she had scars and wounds over much her
body from barb wire which had slashed her legs and side.
Despite the skeletal body and painful wounds, Daisy remained calm and
affectionate - hoping that she would be provided with a kind touch or word.
Daisy was killed like most of the dogs who are unfortunate enough to land
in one of the animal controls in the area - with a kill rate well over 50
percent, the odds of leaving the building in anything other than a garbage
bag, are small.
Add in unnecessary killings when a rescue agency has actually been found,
and it becomes completely outrageous and appalling.
The individuals who were pulling for Daisy to beat the odds want the
officials in the area known as the "Midlands" of South Carolina to know that
people do care about dogs like Daisy...
