Uh, how rapidly we forget?

Eisenhower did not give a damn about the Space Race. This probably cost Nixon the race in 1960.

NASA was the dreamchild of the Senate Majority Leader, Liein' Lyndon Johnson. He drafted the legislation. He sat on the House of Representatives to get them to pass it. He then forced it through the Senate. Eisenhower, off in la-la land, then signed the bill, one of his more stupid actions in a life full of stupid decisions -- Eisenhower, by my count, made ONE really good decision but, for the rest, it was all dumb calls. And I have an "I Like Ike" button next to me, a button I wore in 1956. Idiot though Eisenhower was, he certainly was better than Adlai Stevenson to serve as President.

There is a reason why the Johnson Space Flight Center is named, well, the Johnson Space Flight Center. NASA honors its founder.
