The 35 range only use batteries for the meter. The camera shutter is
totally mechanical and operates in full 'guess' mode when required.

From memory, the meter in the TE & SE is using corrent all the time the
meter is exposed to light(as is with the 35,35T & 35S). The difference
with the 'ugly' ones is that the metering powers LEDs (early ones at
that) which eat batteries when the meter is exposed to light whereas
with the 'pretty' ones, the battery only had to swing a needle. Users
were critical of this point and I believe that this is why Rollei used
the early system (battery inside camera and swing needle meter) when
they re-intriduced the 35 Classic.

I have found the LED metering quirky and prefer the needle system
because it is easy to see by how much the 'set exposure' differs from
the meter reading. With the LED it's almost 'it's right or it's wrong'
and I find it can take a bit of time to find the optimum LED
display.........and then the subject moves or the light changes. ;-)

The meter is always on in the original, 1.35v single battery type - I
don't know about "the ugly models", having never worked on one. :)
