The mercury cells in my Nikon F finder finally died and I can get no more. I tried an experiment which works and may be of interest to others since it may work on other devices which use type 625A cells. The voltage of size 675 zink-air hearing aid betteries is correct, very nearly the same as the mercury cells. The physical size is wrong. My solution is a bit of a makeshift but seems to work. I used rubber O rings to build up the outer diameter. In the Nikon finder the positive connection for the cell is a small contact at the side of the battery compartment. In order to make contact with it I wrapped a small bit of aluminum foil around the O ring before pushing it onto the cell. It is held against the cell by the O ring and against the contact by the other side of the O ring, which is a slightly tight fit in the compartment. With the two cells in place the test position of the meter reads right on the dot and a test against a Sekonic meter indicates the reading is as close to being identical as I can read. Undoubtedly the life of the ZA cells is much shorter than the mercury cells but they are cheap and easy to find (got mine at Radio Shack) and keep the equipment working. The cells in my Luna-Pro are about the same age and will probably also need replacment. I will report later whether the same expedient works for it. I know there are all sorts of adaptors available but this is something I could do in a few minutes with materials at hand.
