The 16mm involved hair-thin elements, and so Zeiss kept production in Germany. They had thought it would be a low-demand lens but they were wrong, wrong, wrong, as conversions to other mounts, especially Leica M, appeared. Zeiss had planned on a single production run but had to do two more over the next several years to meet the very high demand. Even so, supply never met demand, and the lens has held its value a decade after production ceased.
