A well trained technician will first of all use a detailed schematic and with a
oscilloscope trace out waveforms or signal paths to determine where the fault
lies. Merely replacing or swapping boards is not a good solution and should
only be done when the defective board is located.
Of course I am assuming that detailed service material is available. (While
employed at Hammond Organ Co. a detailed service book was published for every
model that ever made it to the market place and was freely available to owners
upon request.

Thank you for your good advice. I will pass all of this on to the Rodgers
technician. To answer at least some of the questions:
* I have checked and there is nothing in the headphone socket that would
switch on the mute.
* Good question about the mouse eating the ribbon cables. We have
checked and there is no apparent damage to any of the cables (we did have a
mouse eat a rubber water pipe in our washer several years ago).
* The technician did follow the cables associated with the mute function
but all seemed okay. Not sure about the red light showing the mute status –
will check with the Rodgers technician.
* The organ is located in Escondido, CA. About 30 miles north of San
Diego
Thanks again. I will try and keep you updated. Been working on this for at
least two months now.
Warmly,
John

Because it can be as simple as a single board, like for instance, I had a
problem organ once. We swapped every board in the cage, then starting changing
every cable, it came down to the swell/crescendo indicator board. Disconnected
that and the darn thing worked. Things at times are not as clear cut as one
would like and I worked on these organs for 11 years.

It would seem the bigger question is why the Rodgers Technician can’t find the
problem after “swapping almost all of the parts” and the owner has to resort to
asking the list for help??????
