No, the laptop motherboards also have this battery you speak of, however the
battery, the main 1, is used for keeping the motherboard on low stand by
power, so that when you press the power  button, or if you have wake on lan
enabled, when the signal is sent to the network adapter the motherboard can
turn on the computer and power up all the other components. This is the same
way that a desktop works, except a desktop of course draws the power from
the AC outlet, the laptop does too, but when it's running on battery only it
draws this small amount of power from the battery. It ads up after a few
hours...

Hi i guess that the main battery in a laptop is used even when the laptop is
shut down for things like keeping the date and time correct, a desk top has
a battery on the motherboard which charges again when the pc is turned back
on again, i guess a laptop doesn't have this maybe and uses the main battery
for this function.
