In case anyone needs to update your NLS player, here are instructions and a
link for the software update for your player:
Glenn

Many of you may use, and work with people who use, the NLS digital talking
book players. Because they are digital, the players have software that run
them, and there have been upgrades to the software. The most recent release
of the software is version 2.1.7 (October 24, 2011).

If your player is working well for you, there is no major reason to upgrade.
However, some people may need to upgrade in order to play downloaded NLS
books, Learning Ally books, multiple books on a thumb drive, etc. Here are
the steps for updating:

Before upgrading your firmware, you should check the current version of your
firmware to see if an upgrade is necessary. To do so, remove any flash drive
or NLS cartridge from your player and power it on. The player will be in key
describer mode. Press the sleep key located just above the play button
fairly quickly about 10 times. The player will begin announcing its serial
number and firmware version number repeatedly. You can stop the announcement
by pressing any key.

1.Obtain the latest software from the NLS web site:

http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/DTBMsoftware-latest.zip

2.Extract (unzip) this file onto a cartridge or USB drive so that the
directory "upgrade" appears in the "root" directory of the drive.

3.Turn on the player.

4.Insert the cartridge or USB drive containing the software.

5.The player will announce "Upgrading your player's software."

6.Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10
seconds), then remove the cartridge.

7.The upgrade will only occur if the player's version is older than the
version of the software on the cartridge; reinserting the cartridge will not
repeat the upgrade.

I have used a thumbdrive in the front port before, but I did not know that
there was a difference. How is this the case?

I got a fully charged player with I was first sent the basic model. Then I
had asked for the more advanced player as I found out it could do alot more.
By the way, most of you might know this already but, incase you don't, it's
better to use the cartridge slot with a thumb drive then the USB port side
as this will drain the battery quicker.
