Hi Kim, I have taken a B&S into an electronics repair shop, and they can order the highest rechargeable NICAD batteries for this purpose, and either have them soldered or do it themselves. I believe it 6 of the rechargeable batteries. I considered finding a tray to fit inside with springs, like you used to find at Radio Shack, but I don't think they carry them any more. But if you could find a tray to fit inside, you could just find the highest milliamp of nickel cadmium double-A batteries for it. If I remember, there are 5 screws to take the bottom off. Or you could take it to a place like Batteries Plus, and assure them that they are just the NICAD double-A batteries inside, and they may do it for you. I had it done around 8 years ago or so, and it was around 40 dollars. HTH. He's doing well just to put food on the table at this point. So I'm attempting to diagnose the problem and see what can be done to correct it short of sending the unit in--which is not happening. The battery in the unit is completely dead--so finding out the make and model of the Braille 'n Speak battery would be a great help. When the unit is plugged in, it works for about 15 seconds, then it stops working. Unfortunately due to transportation issues, I can't get to the unit to physically determine what's going on for quite some time. If someone could please give me some direction on next steps, I would really appreciate it.
