Cam,

What do you want to do with the pi? Ubuntu works, arch Linux works and 
raspberry os works. 

Eloquence is tricky, you need voxin but I do not know how updated  the 
eloquence voices are. 

I have switched to espeak and   now, cannot use anything else.

The mate desktop is one of the most accessible desktops around and you will 
want to use that.
