I just realised you are using a Raspberry 400. That device does not have an
internal soundcard. If you use a USB soundcard, it will work.

Hello,
I used Raspberry as a local server for a long time, now want to play with it's
desktop.
Yesterday imaged with Ubuntu Mate, however it didn't work as I expected.
Now I've downloaded BT's talking image and booted. PI appeared on network;
however there is no speech.
Also, what is the login info for BT image?
Lastly, I bought a converter from micro HDMI to VGA+ audio jack, but not sure
it is working or not.
Do I need to install dummy display driver etc to work?

I purchased Eloquence and it does not work on ARM processors. I ended
up using Vocaliser.

What do you want to do with the pi? Ubuntu works, arch Linux works and
raspberry os works.
Eloquence is tricky, you need voxin but I do not know how updated the
eloquence voices are.
I have switched to espeak and now, cannot use anything else.

The mate desktop is one of the most accessible desktops around and you
will want to use that.
