To name a couple Zcode virtual machines:
Frotz and Fizmo
I believe both are named after spells or characters from Infocom's
games, hence the odd sounding names. That said, compatibility with
both seems a bit mixed... most of the Zcode games I've downloaded work
in both, but there are a few that work in Frotz but not Fixzmo, a few
the run in Fizmo but not Frotz, and a few that run in neither.... Best
I can tell, the older the format, the more likely it is to run... and
I think some of the games that worked inneither might've been some of
the ones that had 8-bit graphics in addition to text... All that said,
the Zork Trilogy works in both and are quite fun albeit full of guide
dang it moments... and sadly, these are the kind of game that guides
remove all the challenge.
I also think Adventure has a native Linux port... and there's a
text-only version of 2048 available on Debian, though I'm not sure if
it's made it into stable and Raspbian yet.
