(Front, Interior, Back) applys to where the device is mounted. IE If you have a small procurve switch mounted tat the top. The switch does not take up the entire rack. So I normally just check the back and/or Interior then if I wanted to mount a pdu on the same U as the switch I know thier is still room in the front of the rack.

When you are looking at the picture of the rack in racktables you are looking at the side view. A server would take up all three spaces. Where as a pdu/switch/patch panel would most likely only take front or back.

I'm working on some docs on my end about how I'm attempting to implement RackTables in my setting and I'm finding that I don't have a clear understanding of the how & why (and proper use) of the three ports per rack position (front, interior, back).

Does anyone have any background they could give me? Once I get it clearified in my head I'm going to try and update the wiki documentation to reflect this information.

And, from messages in the mailing list there's been progress made on the use of "patch panels" and I'm wondering if anyone's got any notes on that.
