Val Burton was the fellow. Stuck at a camera store because of the
black list. Most of the artistic side of photography that I know I
learned from him. I had another mentor, Carson Taylor, who taught me
technical stuff. Carson was a recording engineer and a bit later did
classical recording for Capitol records.
I also have my Curta (Type II) calculator: sort-of like the odometer of
a car redesigned by a mad-man. He was not really mad, but a marvelous
mechanical designer.
