Steve, my understanding is that it is a helping to break the bonds that the iron is forming that keep it in place; i.e. attached to the scum. It also raises the pH as it is around 11. CRL is also a similar product to Lime Away. I haven't checked the two side by side though. When I relied on a well for my water, and I wanted to keep my print washer full, I'd put a few drops in after I pulled my last print for the day. It help the scum from forming. It did require a bit longer to run before my first print in the washer on next use.
