You can use magnetic damping.  This consists of an aluminum plate
attached to the balance arm and a U-shaped magnet attached to the base.
The plate fits within the U but doesn't touch it.  Eddy currents
generated as the arm swings cause the arm to stop faster.

Hi,

beeing spoiled at work with digital balances with "Tara" knobs and fast
response measuring, I find working a Ohaus triple beam balance at home a
"little" annoying, it takes a long time before the arm stops swininging,
and gently stopping it with swinging isn't really speeding up things.
Are there other tricks for working a bit less slow with these things?
