I guess I am a relative "newbie." I thing I first got onto this site in 2000.
I cannot begin to tell you how much this site, the discussions happening here,
and the print exchanges I have been able to participate in have meant to me
over the years. Thank you for founding this wonderful group and thankyou for
continuing to make the older content available.

For newer readers, a little history might be interesting...
Back in the late 1990s I got sick of the never ending flame wars
and general misbehavior on USENET and started a little list called
pure-silver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx. It was hosted on a Unix computer
in my basement and used the "majordomo" mailing list manager.
The rules were simple, don't be vulgar, don't attack people
personally, no politics, and generally stay on topic: Silver
Photography.
The list was just about an instant success. Literally hundreds
of photographers from around the world signed up and almost
universally behaved themselves. In the process of the many
discussions, the community produced a remarkable body of advice,
technique, kidding around, and generally moved monochrome
film photography forward in interesting ways.
After about 10 years or so, I was kind of done with running the list.
It was labor intensive and a general pain in the neck. "majordomo"
turned out to not be a great list manager so I had to do a lot
of stuff for our non-technical users myself. I wanted to make
pictures not run a server ;)
Upon the announcement that I intended to terminate the list, a great
deal of ... howling ... ensued. I got both a lot of warm and wonderful
thanks from people and a certain amount of grumping. (When you
give people things for free, some say they'll take two.)
There was a brief period of debate about where to rehost the list and
who should run it, but eventually this list, pure-silver@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
came into being run by new and very capable admins.
I am forever grateful that I had a chance to create and nurture the original
list. I look back over some of that material and still learn new
and interesting stuff each time.
This archive it a testament to that time and to the many wonderful
photographers that contributed to its content. It is my gift back to
a community that gave me so much personally.
You may copy and distribute it as you wish with only two conditions:
1. Provide attribution as to the source.
2. Don't charge people anything - give it away
