Well of course its entirely subjective. I like what I think is enhanced
sharpness/edge effect that I get with the DK-60 1:3 over other developers.
The DK-60 I use is from a can(I have about 15 cans) that is likely to be 20
years old or better. I'm sure it is the same as in the Photo Index, the
canned developer I'm using is Kodak's. 1:3 dilution allows me to used times
that are in the 8 1/2 to 10 minute range. I've used it for 32 Panatomic-X,
100 T-Max, 100 Delta, Acros, 100 APX, Plus-X, FP-4, 400 T-Max, Tri-X, HP-5,
400 Delta, 400 Neopan, and others. I believe the can will make about 12 or
13 liters. (I'm responding while on a break at work so the details are from
memory and I have CRS). Using it 1:3 makes 13 liters last for a long time.
In the past I've used Xtol, lots of scratch mixed developers with
hydroquinone and phenidone or metol or even sodium ascorbate such as D23 or
D25 or Gainer's mixes, PMK, HC-110, etc. If I should ever use up all the
cans of DK-60 I have, I'll mix it from scratch using the Photo Index
formula. I'll likely keep and use the PMK on occasion till it is gone or
bad, but I'll give away the other packaged developers I have on hand because
I feel like the DK-60 is best.
I'll get you some times when I get home tonight. I've been using
Panatomic-X and 100 T-Max lately, and the times at 68 degrees F have been 8
1/2 for the Panatomic and 10 for the 100 T-Max. I use a Patterson tank,
agitate by inversions for the first 30 seconds, and then 4 inversions every
30 seconds after that. I use 68 degrees F as the standard temperature and
adjust the time according to the standard time/temperature chart and the
temperature of my mixed developer. The developer gives me negative which
prints properly on a variable contrast paper(usually PWT) without any
contrast filtration.
And once again, its all subjective on my part, I've not done any test other
than looking a the negatives with a 15X loupe, and printing them.
