I have a USSR 35mm enlarger-in-briefcase that was new in 1970. Sometime in
the past 20 years the foam lining of the case went bad. I would like to
rescue it to the extent that I can. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Scape
with small plaster knife/smoother (what *are* they called???) and then clean
with naphtha/alcohol/turpentine/???
Since there is presumably nothing critical in that case, I'd take
it outside and scrape vigorously with a putty knife with a sharp
edge. Once you've got it as clean as you can, use a paint brush
an paint on "Goo Gone". Let it sit there and even paint on more
coats. The Goo Should soften the adhesive to the point where it will
eventually come completely clean. It will just take a while.
When you're almost done, soak a good wad of paper toweling with Goo Gone
and wipe off the surfaces until they are adhesive free. When dry, I'd
take a final pass with a hot, wet rag to remove any remaining debris.
Outside = minimize breathing this stuff in, not matter what the labels
tell you. I'd wear eye protection and nitrile gloves for the entire process.
