darkroom. A changing bag I can count on being light tight. A daylight tank
should be light tight. Moving film from holder to tank in a changing bag
should be no problem. Light leaks however are something I have to constantly
watch. For paper, its not ideal, but if I miss something in the set up,
ruining a piece of photography paper isn't necessarily a good thing, but its
not the end of the world. I can make a new print. It is hard to fix a
ruined negative.
It does bring me to one interesting idea that I wonder if anyone has ever
considered. Has anyone ever made a changing bag big enough that one could
put a set of 4x5 trays in it and tray process inside a changing bag? Light
leaks wouldn't matter then

As I said before I use the Jobo expert drums. But when I occasionally
use tray processing I clip the corners of the negatives with a nail
clipper inside the changing bag. Just enough to eliminate the sharp
angles so the negatives can't damage each other, because I'm not perfect
and accidents happen.

back then my darkroom really was dark. Now I have to deal with doors,
windows and a dryer vent, anyone of which or maybe all of them are
providing extra exposure. Should I need to wear sunglasses in the
darkroom.? Sarcasm aside, I have never noticed problems with prints,
and with film I have always used daylight tanks in this darkroom room
or sort of darkroom. I suspect a lot of darkrooms are not as dark as
they should be.

Yes, I learned that tray method from Fred Picker and have been using
it for 40+ years. Fred said to practice with some scrap film or
negatives in the light till we got the hang of it, then do it with
real negatives we wanted to process in total darkness. I've had no
trouble working in complete darkness.

Because I was originally taught to develop all sheet film in trays,
I have always had no issues doing the sheet film shuffle in the
dark. But as mentioned earlier in the thread it gets a bit difficult
shuffling more than 5 or so at a time. However, it’s very
convenient to develop -N,N,+N all at the same time.
Now, I typically develop 4x5 in a Jobo reels and 8x10 in the trays.
I shoot a lot more 4x5 than 8x10 so it’s not an issue having
enough sheets to fill the Jobo tanks. I typically only have a few or
hand full of 8x10.
I even use PMK for the Jobo and trays.
That works for me. Your experience may vary.
