From the two symptoms you describe; developer turning dark brown and
being weak in its action, I would suspect you may have forgotten to add
the sodium sulfite when mixing it.

It's useful to keep a notebook and enter information on each ingredient
as they are weighed out and added. For example,

        tare x grams
        chem y grams
        ------
        totl z grams

That way you can double check your work and also identify an error
later.

Subject: [pure-silver] Ansco 120 failure

I mixed some Ansco 120 according to the recipe listed below yesterday,
but the experiment failed. The developer was weak and the development
was uneven, some parts of the picture never developing (usually the same

areas from one picture to another). I first tried with the standard 1:2
dilution, then added all my stock; it improved he stuff somewhat, but
not enough.

What went wrong? I'm pretty sure that the chemicals were fresh enough
(and except for the metol, little can go wrong anyway) but the mixture
turned a deep brown (not black as Ansco 130, though). Does this soup
need some kind of ripening? Was it possibly too warm? Contaminated tap
water (I usually use demineralized water)?

The recipe here:

Water (125 deg. F.) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 750.0 ml Metol . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12.3 g Sodium Sulfite . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 36.0 g Sodium Carbonate (mono.) . .
. . . . . . . . 36.0 g Potassium Bromide . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. 1.8 g Water to make...........................................1 liter
