If I cannot conquer this, I am going to opt for 150mm lens as my "long"
lens because the smaller Speed Graphic would only barely focus an 8" lens
at infinity let alone anything closer.
I have a working hypothesis to explain the problem. I was rotating
the lens board 90 degrees to clear the shutter from the body shutter
release assembly mounted to the front standard. The problem with this
is that the "dimples" of the board that ensure a snug fit were now
respectively, right- and left, rather than top- and bottom. This means that
the lens board could move slightly while in place.
Rotating the board 180 degrees ensures that board dimples are at bottom-
and top relative to normal, but under the board retention sliders and thus
held in place snugly.
I have to do some more testing but the first couple of shots seem promisingly
better. The lens is an f/5.5 and I shot the tests at f/16 and f/22 to find
that sweet spot in the lens. More to come when I know more.
