It seems to me that in some of our devices, brf and brl and pretty much interchangeable. I have heard that the file's playing properly depends upon the method by which it was translated, or the program, perhaps. I don't know if that's an accurate statement or not; but I have found that most of the ones that I've tried (though not in a plex) don't work correctly.
