Maybe I can add some info to Per's answers for even better understanding....

I still have some issues though since I every time I connect I get a message telling me to update my account which I have done a number of times.
They appear to have gone through since another station saw them on his end.
Still no change and no ability to send email.

When the server has received your mail record it sends:
'Updating server;
'Updated record for KZ5ED'
When you don't get that, the record has not been stored on the server.
When the data is not valid the server will ask again next time you connect.
I have never seen the Updating Server Message.
I continue to get a request to update every time I connect.
I did this the first time I tried a few days ago and yesterday I tried it five times.
Now I know what to expect and will continue to try and figure that out.

I then installed Server 0.9.20 on Ubuntu 9.04 with FLDIGI 3.12.4 since I figured out maybe I could understand this better if I was familiar with both ends.

The only issue after the installation is I got an Application Not Found Message when trying to start. I was able to resolve the issue by changing the rflinkserver.pl file to executable and just for good measure change the owner from root to the user. Server pops up and gives the routes not found error. Created routes and restarted and every thing looks good. I see my server on the site and I beacon every ten.

This is wrong. The way to install the server is:
* untar the archive in your home directory (tar zxvf
pskmail_server-0.9.20.tar.gz)
* cd into the new directory (cd pskmail_server-0.9.20)
* from a terminal run: sudo ./libinstall.sh * answer yes to most questions.....
* after the libraries have been installed run sudo ./install.sh
* cd to ~
+ run pskmail_server
These are the instructions I followed.
Since I am old I figured I had messed up the first time and followed your instructions given to someone else to delete the program and did it again. When it happened again I figured out I needed to figure out what was going on and dove into the scripts. That is where I discovered that you were checking to see if the file existed and if it was executable, if it failed it would throw throw the file not found error.. I just did it manually and fixed the problem I think.

If you leave out one of these steps the system will miss the required libraries and the program will not be installed properly.

Question 1: It appears from the instruction that we are to update the data files manually. I cannot open either of the db files so I am missing something. I ran out of time so I was not able to debug that one. I read about using the template to create each of the accounts and I tried but I was not able to. I am trying to use a text editor to open the file I did not try vi or anything else.
Am I going down the right track?

wrong, the data can be sent to the server by the client, the sysop does not need to touch it.If that is necessary cd to .pskmail/rflinkuser and run ./userdb.pl

I was going to try this when I ran out of time. I figured that the updating of the server is supposed to occur automatically but I was not sure.
Question 2: When I get this up and running for the time being I will be running on a spare radio that does not have cat control but works well with FLDIGI and a Rigblaster you just have to tune it manually. I figured that since I will not be scanning frequencies that will be fine and I can leave it on 10148.00. Does anyone see a problem with that?

no problem. Set $scanning to "S" instead of "F" in the .pskmail/pskmailrc.pl
file.
the server will then scan modes, not frequency + modes

Thanks I will change that this evening
Question 3: Do I have to Register the Server with something / someone?

actually the server connects automatically to an APRS tier 2 server.
The hosts and ports are in the APRS section of .pskmail/pskmailrc.pl
If one APRS2 server is not available it will connect to the next one in the
list.

Question 4: Is there a setting to have the server Beacon on the Air or do we not want to do that? The only beacon now is via the internet. Is the Server supposed to key the radio when beaconing? Does it use FLDIGI for communicating with the radio? I am a bit confused since the Server Config file has a Radio Command Section. I thought server app worked as an application and fldigi as the modem / Interface. I have my doubts now because I was keying the radio and the beacon message went out so I think the server is not able to communicate with fldigi to tell it to key.

You can see the beacon in the rx text window of fldigi.
This will only work if you follow the install instructions...

Any advice is appreciated.

Hope this helps:
