John,

as soon as my auto tuner has pre-tuned the bands I want to use, it only retunes 
(from memory) 
when I actually transmit on a new band, so there is hardly any strain on the 
relays.

Even if you scan, the tuner should only retune when transmitting on a new band, 
which is normally the case when you send beacons at the start of each hour. The 
signal loss on receive because the tuner is on the wrong band is normally no 
problem, as 
the S/N ratio does not change.
