BTW, does anybody have access to the JetBrains beta program. They have
a new editor that tries to compete with VSCode and it would be
interesting to know how they address accessibility there.

Hi Dante,
Likely they have screen reader mode because PyCharm is Java-based and need
the Java Accessibility Bridge. Either they have optimized/disabled some
components they feel don't' work with the JAB or otherwise think loading
the
JAB hurts performance.
I've not tried it, given it is Java and JAB reliant, I'd not hold out a lot
of hope.
I agree with you an explicit mode is not ideal. Btw, I know VSCode is not
Visual Studio, but for some reason it also does this accessibility mode
thing.

Hey folks,

JetBrains' products are one of the ones that we're always watching from
Visual Studio. If folks have got any feedback, particularly in things that
you feel they do better or worse than Visual Studio, I'd love to hear it.
I've always been an opponent to explicit "Screen Reader Modes" in
applications, but I'm curious if it does end up delivering a better
experience.

Anyway, if anyone has feedback to share, I'd appreciate hearing it.

And, another quick google search brought up the following form of a wiki

paying for any of the pro products, when I fired up the pyCharm
community edition for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to
enable screenreader accessibility mode, so, just thought would mention
this here on this list.

The installer downloaded was pycharm-community-2021.3.1.exe, and,
pulled it off the following page - you need to make sure you download
the community edition, and, not the free trial of the pro version:

Anyway, haven't given it too much of a go/run as of yet, but, if it
tries to specifically offer screenreader compatibility, will
definitely see what it has to offer - hence sharing it here, in case
of interest to others.
