The cursor blink rate will simply help JAWS track the cursor. That way when you use the read line commands etc, you're more likely to get the information about the line the input cursor is on. However, because the only cursor of any meaning on the mainframe is the insertion pointer, you will have to use the JAWS cursor a lot to read the areas of the screen that the insertion pointer can't get to. The graphics options probably won't make much difference, since the only information of any use to JAWS will be the text. Mainframes aren't usually big on graphics, and so graphics settings are more likely to be to do with features of the client itself, such as toolbars and icons. In those cases, you'll be in familiar territory when it comes to getting JAWS to work with a Windows application. In my experience JAWS has never been particularly good with mainframe screens. If you want to do a bit of scripting., you can enhance its behaviour. But you'll probably need to do a fair bit to get comfortable in the end. I think there is an option to adjust the graphics and cursor blink rate, but have not yet tried it. Will give it a go today & let you know how I get on. Thanks. I used two clients, one performing better than the other. The less successful was Attachmate. The one that worked best was a product called Entire Connection, produced by Software AG who made the Natural/ADABAS language/DBMS. I'm not sure that either are available any more. I also found that JAWS was not particularly good at tracking the cursors in either of these products without some considerable fiddling with things like the cursor size, shape and blink rate. firstly, try to avoid Java based clients. They're bad news in accessible terms and take a disproportionate amount of customisation of both JAWS and the application to get them to play nicely together. I had endless problems with HOD (Host on Demand) especially from version 4 onwards and eventually gave up on it. As whether the client is a terminal emulator. If it is, then check that it allows customisation of cursor size, shape and blink rate. Also check that you can customise the colours displayed by the mainframe. Some emulators let you override the colours the mainframe sends so that you can track highlights better. You could try writing your own JAWS scripts to try and help track highlights and other screen information. but as many emulators don't render the mainframe screen as separate items, but rather put all the output into a single control, it is often difficult to do much fine tuning. Trying to get the JAWS cursor to locate at particular screen locations is rarely useful, because most terminal emulators vary the position in which the data is rendered by many pixels for no very good reason. Sorry not to be very positive, but terminal emulation is a whole experience I am now very glad is behind me since I started using JAWS. It was much easier with Window Bridge. I use XP and JAWS 12. However, when I open the mainframe application or natural engineer, JAWS goes quiet. It does not allow me read anything, even when I change the cursor. Please is there anyone here who has worked with either mainframe systems or natural engineer? How did you use it? Thanks in advance.
