It could also be a corrupted file or registry
entry that is required during
boot. Or a bad sector or cluster on the hard
drive.

I would immediately remove the hard drive, set it
to be the slave or
cable-select if supported, then install it in a
second computer and back up
all of your data.

Then set it back to master and reinstall it and
resume your trouble
shooting.

Will it boot to any bootable disk? If so run
your malware scanner from the
recovery disk.

Also run scandisk and defrag from the command
prompt.

If you have Norton or similar utilities run a
registry cleaner.

If your computer has a diagnostics partition
(like DELLs do) try booting to
that and run any diagnostics that sound like a
candidate to find something.

Boot to setup and make sure everything there is
still correct. You might
try some changes there for troubleshooting
purposes (boot order,
enable/disable various items/features etc). Keep
notes on what you change
or else you will have to use the default to reset
it and that is not always
the best to do.
