What does the owners manual say about this problem? Please look in the
troubleshooting section to see if the problem is covered there. Have you
called the tech support or customer service number yet? What did they say?
Have you looked at the manufacturers website for a forum on the device?
What did you find there? Is there a Micr$oft KB article on the subject?

In WinXp, the existence of the device should be detected once the device
is
plugged into a USB port. Though you may need to reboot or at least
close
and reopen Windows Explorer to get it to show in your folder tree. It
SHOULD appear as the next available drive letter... Removable Disk (F:)
for
example or maybe simply as the model number of the device.... Maxtor
XX3456 for example.

Don

Try formatting the Hard drive using the Win ME computer.
You might need to create a boot floppy and do this using FDISK.

Chris

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
FDISK does not format a hard drive. It partitions it. The boot disk
SHOULD

have a format command on it. IF it doesn't look for it on the WinME
computer and copy it there.

At the DOS prompt the command would be:

format d: /s

where d is the letter of the drive you wish to format and the /s is
optional to copy the system to the drive being formatted. The /s
should
not be necessary if the drive will be a data storage drive only and will
NOT

be used as a boot drive.

In the past I have heartily recommended www.Unlimited-mail.com as an
excellent paid email service with superior customer support.
Unfortunately,

I can no longer do that. Apparently they have grown too large to
continue providing customer service like they used to. E-mails to their
support department regarding a specific problem have been ignored for
several weeks now. Also, the email server suffers from frequent
problems that last as

little as a few minutes to as much as several days. I would strongly
encourage everyone to consider other email services... especially the
new Google mail which is rolling out free POP/SMTP access for their
members.
