Robin, is there any chance you could sacn them again at a higher resolution? 
That is the best thing to do, all these other programs do is allow you to 
minipulate, alter, and extrapulate what you have, but they can't 'create' an 
accurate representation of
the original picture.

also, jpeg is a lossy compression format, I would suggest saving the original 
scan in tiff format, working with that until you get it the way you want it, 
then save it in a compressed tiff format. If you must use jpg, convert to jpg 
after doing your
editing and use the best resolution you can afford to save it at because jpg 
alters the picture throwing out subtle differences before compressing the data.
