Terry,
There's a really good chance that ANY error or security warning messages
you see are actually coming from the malware as tit tries to get you to help
it disable things you actually need. This is called Social Engineering
(where the bad guys get YOU to do the dirty work for them).

The first thing I want you to do is to relocate that HOSTS file. If the
only one you see there is called "HOSTS.backup", remove the '.backup' part
of the filename. It should only be called "HOSTS" and NOT have any type of
extension. After renaming it, press F5 on your keyboard to refresh that
Explorer window. If it doesn't immediately revert back to a '.backup' file,
you just might be able to access the Malwarebyte's site you mentioned
earlier. If you can get there and download the program, we stand a fairly
good chance of killing this without TOO much of a struggle.

I'm very close to heading off to bed, but I'll stick around to help you
with this if we can keep the flow going. Let me know how things go.

Happy Holidays,
Gman
