Well... advantage/disadvantage... nothing really major. They really are the 
same beasts, just in different suits.
Internals usually cost less. And, are much tidier if they fit in your tower. 
Some towers are either too small to accept another drive, or are already filled 
to capacity. For someone like me, all my systems are stacked inside with 
multiple drives, so external is the only way to go.

Plus... externals can be removed and take from here to there... SHOULD that be 
required.

Most externals have on/off switches, so you can keep them off and only turn 
them on when you need them. If you don't use the drive much, that feature alone 
can add years to the drive.

And, finally... the externals make you look all techy when your friends come 
over and see all the lights emanating from the office from all those external 
drives.
