[pchelpers] sound problem

Ok, smart people, I have a challenge for you. My sound function is almost
totally dead. Can't play CD's, can't play .wav files, video clips are silent.
However, I discovered recently that on Yahoo Chat, the voice function works
very well. Also, while on chat, I was sent to a URL having a .wav file. While
the "talk" function within Yahoo was active, the file would play. Once I logged
out of Yahoo, the .wav file went silent.
Do any of you smart people have any suggestions I could try?
