The solutions are very easy: tools / account settings / server settings: uncheck these 3 check for new messages at startup check for new messages every... automatically download new messages view / layout / message pane (or just toggle on and off with F8) You don't need to turn off the preview (message) pane for security reasons (it won't run any hidden executables or scripts), but you might like to sometimes see more of the message list at a time. That's when the F8 toggle is pretty cool. By the way, i think the following settings are the default values, but it doesn't hurt to check: tools / options / advanced / privacy check: block loading of remote images uncheck: enable JavaScript Let me know if these are not right; i'm running a Finnish version.
