Hi, Inge & good morning from Arizona: 1) Absolutely do not use a USB hub, e.g., plug the drive into its own port; 2) Try using a port other than the 1 you're using; 3) If those things still do not work, then: a) Go to control panel. Go to performance & maintenance, I believe that's what it's called in 7. We're looking for a button called 'Environment Variables'. Once found, go to the 'System' portion, click 'New', & then type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices for the name & 1 for the value. If u can't find what I'm telling u to look for, then go to a command prompt by clicking start, then run, typing cmd, & clicking 'OK'. At the prompt that appears, type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices = 1 & press enter. If u get no errors, type exit & press enter. That's a 1-time fix, the 1st thing I told u is permanent, so it's preferable if u can do the 1st option. At this point, go into control panel, then device manager, & click the view menu. Click show hidden devices. Uninstall any USB storage devices u find. If none of these works, then the possibility is that the drive is failing. Sometimes a little cold storage in the freezer overnight will bring it back long enough to get the data off it. What we often do in case of hardware failure is remove the drive from the case & stick it in a spare enclosure to see if the enclosure circuitry is the problem--it sometimes is, as opposed to the drive itself.
